Attractions:	Without any doubt, the primary tourist attraction of parkes is the legendary radio telescope. One of the world's most potent telescopes, its primary role is in collecting, magnifying and analysing radio waves. The visitors' centre (open daily from 8.30am - 4.15pm) has an audio-visual demonstrate, interactive elements, computer tours, a working model of the telescope, a hologram, a live connection with the control room computers, project material, souvenirs, posters and the 'dish cafe'. In the town district, you can visit garden bower art studio, tyndall's lavender farm, parkes museum and craft corner and garden centre. 10 minutes from town you can visit the alpaca farm. Parkes offers numerous and varied sporting facilities. The golfer is well catered for with a scenic 18 hole grassed greenish course with watered fairways. (helen & mal are both members) Parkes is an ideal starting purpose to visit the surrounding areas: the western plains zoo in dubbo is only 70 minutes away, a drive to cowra takes about 65 minutes, and the trip to orange takes only 60 minutes.
